Gin

What it is

Gin is a distilled alcoholic beverage that derives its predominant flavor from juniper berries. It is a versatile spirit that forms the base for a wide range of cocktails, from the classic Martini to the refreshing Gin and Tonic. The complexity of gin comes from its botanical ingredients, which can include herbs, spices, and fruits, making it a favorite among mixologists for its ability to complement various flavors.

How it is made

Gin is typically made through the distillation of grain alcohol, which is then flavored with botanicals, primarily juniper berries. The production process can vary, with some gins being distilled multiple times to achieve a smoother finish. The infusion of botanicals can occur during distillation or through steeping, allowing for a wide range of flavor profiles.

History

The origins of gin can be traced back to the 16th century in the Netherlands, where it was originally developed as a medicinal tonic. It gained popularity in England during the 17th century, particularly during the Gin Craze, when it became a staple among the working class. Over the years, gin has evolved into a refined spirit, with various styles and brands emerging worldwide.

In cocktails

Bartenders use gin in a variety of cocktails, capitalizing on its unique flavor profile. It can be served neat, on the rocks, or as a base for mixed drinks. When crafting cocktails, bartenders often experiment with different types of gin to enhance the drink's character. A classic garnish for gin cocktails includes citrus peels or herbs, which complement the botanical notes.

Worth knowing

In the 18th century, gin was so cheap and widely available in England that it was often referred to as 'Mother's Ruin'.
