How it is made

Vodka is typically made through the fermentation of grains such as wheat, rye, or corn, or from potatoes. The process involves distillation, where the fermented mash is heated to separate alcohol from water and other components. The resulting spirit is often filtered multiple times to achieve a high level of purity and smoothness, which is characteristic of quality vodka.

History

The origins of vodka can be traced back to Eastern Europe, particularly Russia and Poland, where it has been produced since at least the 8th or 9th century. Initially, vodka was used for medicinal purposes and as a food preservative. Over the centuries, it evolved into a popular social drink, becoming a key part of cultural traditions and celebrations in these regions.

In cocktails

Bartenders use vodka in a wide range of cocktails, from classics like the Martini and Bloody Mary to contemporary creations. Its neutral flavor allows it to pair well with various mixers, including juices, sodas, and flavored syrups. When serving vodka, it can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or as a key ingredient in mixed drinks. It's also common to chill vodka before serving to enhance its smoothness.

Worth knowing

Vodka is the most consumed spirit in the world, with Russia and Poland being the largest consumers.
