oz gold tequila
What it is
Gold tequila, or 'oro' tequila, is a type of tequila that is typically aged in oak barrels for a minimum of two months, which gives it a distinctive golden hue and a richer flavor profile compared to its unaged counterpart, silver tequila. This aging process allows the spirit to absorb flavors from the wood, resulting in a smoother and more complex taste. Gold tequila is a popular choice in cocktails due to its balanced flavor, making it versatile for various drinks.
Taste
Smooth, earthy, with hints of vanilla and caramel
How it is made
Gold tequila is made from the blue agave plant, primarily grown in the region surrounding the city of Tequila in Mexico. The agave hearts, or piñas, are harvested, cooked, and then fermented before being distilled. The aging process in oak barrels contributes to its golden color and flavor.
History
Tequila has a rich history that dates back to the 16th century when Spanish conquistadors began distilling agave in the region of Tequila. The first commercial production of tequila began in the late 19th century, and gold tequila emerged as a popular variant due to its smoother taste and appealing color.
In cocktails
Bartenders often use gold tequila in cocktails such as Margaritas, Tequila Sunrises, and Palomas. Its smooth flavor makes it an excellent choice for mixed drinks, and it can also be enjoyed neat or on the rocks. When serving, consider garnishing with lime or salt to enhance the drinking experience.
Worth knowing
Gold tequila is often mistakenly thought to be a blend of silver tequila and caramel coloring, but it is actually aged tequila that develops its color and flavor naturally.
